Justin's Blog« December 2003 | Main | February 2004 »January 23, 2004It just hit me!Well, YDL is installed on the powerbook, I am infact writing this in YDL/galeon as we speak. And I now realise why people say Linux is not ready on the desktop. I was one of those people show said they were wrong, but I am seriously hampered in what I can do here! The desktop looks shit, fonts are awful, and I am as we speak running garnome so that I can get the apps that I want. Yes, maybe it is becasue I have been using OSX for too long that I am used to things working, or maybe I am an asshole, because lets face it some of you (if anyone is) who are reading this may think, well, he knows nothing, he can customise it. Well you are wrong! Why should I have to sit here for hours customising my desktop, why does it not just work! People like haddess are doing wonmderful things in gnome to get some of the good tools available on OSX to have similar apps on Linux, but at this moment in time, it ain't there. I used to use Linux on the desktop all the time, and managed to get by, but that was after many many hours of playing around with installing fonts, changing desktop functionality, compiling apps etc that I was at a point that I could do my job, and over the past 9 months, nothing has changed to change my mind! Don't get me wrong, my job is to design Linux systems for people on the server side, and I think Linux is wonderful in that space, but just don't tell me it is ready for the desktop, it so isn't. I am off now to reboot into OSX so that I can do some work... The kernel does not include ATA-100 support, so I used another one, and then of course the initrd bombs out on me. So I have gone back to the simple solution of using YDL on my powerbook. I doubt whether we will have another good PPC distro out there, oh and before you hapr on about Debian on ppc, I hate it, so I will not be using it. Ahhh I love being pissed off! It is effectively a write off, so I have just gone out to buy another one, the lovely Renault Laguna II. Not that many bells and whistles, but enough to make me happy. So for the past week I have been carless, and will be until Friday. Ahhh, I can't wait to get my habds on the 16v 1.6 ltr engine (that is opposed to my old clio 1.2 ltr). Now all I need to do is get my gps dongle for my palm and I will be a happy bunny. Expect blokey pictures of my new car very soon! Posted by justin at 10:01 AM | Comments (0) |
